With their new album "Fryd," SVER aims for new heights with freshly composed fiddle hits, mixed with old tunes in new form. If you were picking words to describe a typical string quartet, "rocking" probably wouldn't be anywhere near the top of the list. But the Carpe Diem String Quartet is anything but typical, as evidenced by concert repertoire ranging from tango to folk, pop, rock, jazz and traditional works -- or the fact that they're probably the only string quartet to be called "fun and sexy" in the "Washington Post". A gentleman caller, a collection of fragile glass animals and Isaac Lamb as a Southern belle in a big dress. Elements of silent film, physical comedy and the music of Philip Glass highlight this poignant, hilarious and whimsical telling of Tennessee Williams' story of family facades, dreams of escape and the reality of the everyday. Supported by a Creative Heights grant from the Oregon Community Foundation, the CoHo Clown Cohort was created to cultivate an experimental ensemble of clown performers and recontextualize clowning in the modern theatre landscape. "Philip's Glass Menagerie" explores whether or not Williams' emotionally intimate story can be told truthfully and powerfully through the extreme physical expression of clowning. Enjoy the show at Portland's CoHo Theatre. [less-]

When people wax poetic about those golden times and places they wish they could've experienced, there's one scene that inevitably comes up: Greenwich Village in the early '60s. A bohemian paradise that would become the breeding ground for the soon-to-explode counterculture, the Village was home to Beat writers like Kerouac and Ginsberg and folk singers like Bob Dylan, hosted just about every modern jazz great, and brought together countless other iconoclasts and trailblazers that would change the world. Now, you can experience this magical time and watch as the Village evolves through the decades, set to a soundtrack of the era's hit songs, as Stumptown Stages presents the world premiere of "Folk City: The Musical" at Portland's Brunish Theatre.
