What does it mean to be a man? If you asked a hundred people, you'd probably get a hundred different answers. "Yank! A WWII Love Story" follows Stu, a scared Midwestern kid who gets drafted for World War II in 1943. He becomes a photographer for "Yank Magazine", the journal "for and by the servicemen." The story at Chicago's Pride Arts Center Broadway Stage blends humor and drama, with a score that pays homage to the 1940s and explores what it means to struggle, to be a man, and what it is to fall in love. It's London, 1833. No black man has ever starred on a British stage, not even as Othello, until tonight. "Red Velvet" is a fascinating glimpse into theater history that "Time Out New York" raved was "fiery and funny." Young black actor Ira Aldridge steps in to play Othello, unheard of on London's West End. As a bill in Parliament promoting the abolition of slavery sends shock waves through the streets, how will London react to his performance? This multi-award-winning play garnered Lolita Chakrabarti the Critics' Circle Award for Most Promising New Playwright. See "Red Velvet" at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. [less-]

Long before Carole King became a chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, a girl from Brooklyn. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached adulthood she had a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock 'n' roll. But it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her true voice. "Beautiful - The Carole King Musical" is the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. It's no surprise that "Beautiful" won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album of 2015. Now it returns to the Windy City for a smash run at Cadillac Palace Theatre courtesy of Broadway In Chicago. Poet and playwright Aziza Barnes' comedy revolves around a group of female friends learning how to adult in the Big Apple, but Barnes' "BLKS" is definitely not Dunham's "Girls". With its own distinctive Bed-Stuy story to tell, informed by Barnes' completely original contemporary voice, the play covers a single day and night in the lives of three queer black women, one of whom faces an unexpected health scare. So they decide to throw one "final turn-up for the ages," according to the playwright. "And it all goes to shit." Chicago's Tony-winning Steppenwolf Theatre stages this world premiere. [less-]

"The Good Fight" tells the story of The Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), the primary militant group pushing for women's suffrage in the United Kingdom during the early 20th century. Under the slogan "Deeds, not words," the WSPU, led by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Christabel, advocated targeting property as a form of protest, from smashing shop windows to burning and bombing buildings. Imprisoned WSPU members -- including Emmeline Pankhurst -- launched hunger strikes, which were initially countered by the authorities with force-feeding; later the government introduced the "Cat and Mouse Act," under which dying suffragettes were released, only to be re-imprisoned once regaining their health. To defend their members, the WSPU built "The Bodyguard" -- an all-female security team, trained in jiujitsu - and "The Good Fight" began. Experience this fascinating story at City Lit Theater in Chicago. [less-]

An intimate portrait of Camelot's "queen mother," Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, "Rose" is an engrossing solo show set in the summer of 1969, just days after her only surviving son, Ted, has been implicated in the drowning of Mary Jo Kopechne at Chappaquiddick. Alone with her invalid husband in their house in Hyannis Port, Rose attempts to retrace the rise and fall of this great family -- from her husband's infidelity to her daughter Rosemary's tragic lobotomy and, of course, her sons John and Robert Kennedy's assassinations -- as they traversed continents, shaped history and inspired a nation. "Rose" was written by Kennedy scholar Laurence Leamer, author of the national bestseller "The Kennedy Women", and is presented at Greenhouse Theater Center in Chicago. [less-]

Having been diagnosed with liver cancer in the 1990s, Romanian poet and playwright Marin Sorescu sat down to write a series of reflective poems. Michael Hersch's monodrama "On the Threshold of Winter" is based on those poems, with music that mirrors their dark, fragile textures and quietly complex seriousness. The work stitches together Sorescu's reflections into an emotionally affecting and memorable musical experience. For this third installment in Victory Gardens Theater's STAGED series, guest soprano Ah Young Hong joins Dal Niente to reprise her role as the monodrama's "lone, blazing star" ("The New York Times") in this searing and unflinching look at the human journey toward death.
