Singer, songwriter and composer Robbie Fulks grew up among the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the Piedmont region of North Carolina -- and you can hear that heritage in his earnest and passionate country, folk and bluegrass compositions about love, the slings of time and the plight of the common person. His 2017 album "Upland Stories" wound up on the year-end "best of" lists for NPR and "Rolling Stone", and picked up two Grammy nominations to boot. The world is getting hotter, seas are rising and one couple is thinking of having a baby. Both intimate and epic, Duncan Macmillan’s "Lungs" follows the lifespan of one couple’s conversation -- from its first question to its final answer -- as they consider what it truly means to bring one more person into the world. Both funny and searing, theatrical and personal, "Lungs" asks us to examine the responsibilities we have to each other, ourselves, and our environment. Really Really Theatre Group is excited to share this exhilarating piece with Seattle audiences, starting our own conversations about population growth and the global climate crisis. "Lungs" will be directed by Henry Nettleton and will feature Seattle-based performers Erika Fontana and Arjun Pande. Founded in 2016 by Danielle Cohn, Trevor Griffin, and Henry Nettleton, Really Really Theatre Group amplifies the voices and visions of artists wrestling with contemporary cultural questions, producing and developing work in both New York City and Seattle, Washington. From the comedy writers that have had Seattle in stitches for years and the creators of last year's sell-out super hit, "A Very Die Hard Christmas", comes a hilarious new adaption: "Indy Jones". Sketch writers from critically acclaimed troupe The Habit have teamed up with Seattle Public Theater to create a new musical comedy that is sure to bring a blockbuster to the shores of Green Lake this summer. In the U.S. premiere of playwright Kaite O’ Reilly’s internationally renowned play "Peeling", Sound Theatre Company continues staging authentic narratives and breaking new theatrical ground. "Peeling" weaves audio description, sign language and theatrical spectacle into a no-holds-barred play about representation, women, reproduction, war and eugenics. With brisk wit and domestic backstage comedy, O’ Reilly’s storytelling style has earned comparisons to Beckett and Caryl Churchill. In an overproduced, postmodern production of Euripides’ "The Trojan Women", Alfa, Coral, and Beatty have been cast in bit parts to fulfill a playhouse’s misplaced diversity program; but as tokens, the trio never experiences true inclusion. Sound Theatre centers disability justice by assembling a production team and cast that brings authentic lived experiences to this groundbreaking production. Helmed by director Teresa Thuman, "Peeling" offers a fresh, if not jolting, perspective. “Seattle has never seen a play like this before,” theatermaking veteran Thuman predicts. [less-]

Raw emotions run high in this intense, Olivier Award-winning drama nominated for three 2016 Tony Awards including Best Revival, Best Actor and Best Actress. Una, a 27-year-old woman, comes to visit Ray, a 55-year-old man, at his office. They are clearly not comfortable in each other's company, and we soon find out why. Una is looking for answers, not vengeance. Nevertheless, the consequences are shattering. A deeply complex portrayal of two people whose ruined lives are inextricably intertwined. On her decision to direct this intimate, emotional piece, guest director Kimberly Loren Eaton writes, "I'm particularly drawn to stories relevant to major issues in the zeitgeist, which move social and cultural conversations forward, to work which brings marginalized voices into the mainstream, and to women-driven work." Further, Eaton hopes the play serves as a call to action to examine the way we interact with others and the impact we have: “It's important that we are all examining our impact and holding ourselves accountable to be our best. I hope the play helps those who have suffered from any kind of assault to know they are not alone, and moving on is possible. If the production creates any more empathy and understanding in the world or makes someone feel less alone, or more accountable to their fellow human beings, I'll consider it a huge success.” [less-]

From Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker ("The Flick," "The Aliens," "John"), "The Antipodes" is a darkly funny play about stories: who tells them, who hears them, how they’re made, how they make our world. It’s about access: who is allowed to speak, and who gets excused from listening. It’s about the slipperiness of truth and the weird, incisive power of fiction. It’s about myths and monsters. It’s about giant cosmic changes and tiny human ones. It’s also about the singular ability of a conference room of people to decimate a pallet of LaCroix. [less-]

When three women made the pact of solidarity on their summer road trip, no one ever expected that they would soon become the most legendary outlaws in the country. The gang of motorcycle riding, man-eating women known as El Dorado were a fearsome trio of renegades redefining what it meant to be a woman on their own terms with no compromise. How El Dorado found themselves out running the law, robbing corner stores at gunpoint, and seducing their unsuspecting victims while in high heels, fishnets, and nail polish are things legends are made of. With an original Can Can soundtrack featuring the vocal stylings of Seattle’s own Brent Amaker, The Legend of El Dorado showcases performances of original choreography performed by the Can Can Dance Company and a delicious Market-fresh menu. Verdi’s tense and brutal tale of a megalomaniac’s bitter minion caught in a web of lechery, betrayal, and revenge runs the emotional gamut in true operatic fashion. Hugely popular ever since its Venice premiere, the indelible melodrama boasts memorably complex characters and an action-packed plot propelled by a parade of iconic, unflaggingly brilliant music, especially the iconic "La donna è mobile". It’s Election Night at the Presidential Palace and the Duke of Mantua is holding court. Contrasting the bawdy ostentation of the privileged and powerful with the gritty squalor of Rigoletto’s working class struggles, director Lindy Hume pulls no punches drawing comparisons to newsmakers of today.
